I've used my cell phone out on the trail at a ride once.  Base camp
was down in a valley and had no cell service.  My husband gets 
worried if I don't call him at home at least once to let him know
I'm alive after driving to camp alone.  As I hadn't been able to 
call him Friday, I took the phone out with me on trail on Saturday
and called him from the top of a mountain to just let him know
I'd made it to camp and was fine.  I certainly didn't do it with
any intention of cheating or having any advantage, other than 
making my husband feel better. :)
