[RC] rearing, deja vu, whack 'em! - Ed Kilpatrick

ok, y'all.  remember a while back (how long has it been?)   when the guy said to whack 'em when they rear?   it might work in some cases, but it is still a bad idea.
karen mentioned disengaging the hindquarters/circling as a way to stop rearing.  this works very well.  someone referred to this as a one rein stop, which it isnt.  with a one rein stop, you ask the horse to stop, not move his feet.   this works very well to stop rearing also.  horses usually rear because they are afraid or upset, and when they are upset it can often be like having a little temper fit.   the one rein stop teaches them to stop, relax, and face the problem, whether it is fear or anxiety.  i use this method with the horses i train, and it works wonders.  i have had several that had rearing problems and was able to stop the rearing in a few sessions.  it takes some time, and with some horses, LOTS of repititions, but it works, and it works extremely well.       ed
