[RC] Watching the Trail Footing - Val Nicoson

We occasionally ride along back roads and old dirt RR
beds when we come upon them...in addition to
trailering out to trail heads.
When road riding whether along the very edges of the
road/gravel/grass or in the grass, whenever we come
upon trashed soda cans, plastic bottles, etc it seems
my mare has a tendency to find them. Usually this
just involves her hoof kicking them which doesn't
bother her in the least but she does sometimes step on
the trash.
This past weekend we were riding alongside a corn
field to the inside of the ditch...I didn't see a hole
but apparently my mare found it. She started to go
down, halfway to her knees I think, but then recovered
and continued on. Fortunately we weren't going very
fast...a slow working trot...else I don't even want to
think about how it would have ended up.
She has been worked over cavaletti in the past with no
problems, she does manage technical trails with no
problems, it's just the garbage and "hidden" holes and
such that we come across.
Any suggestions out there?? Perhaps she sees these
things as unimportant and no threat? Perhaps she's
looking down the trail and paying more attention to
that then where she places her feet?
TIA,
Val + Sania
