Hi Katey. I've used GC shoes since early in the spring and I love them.
Exactly the same thing happened when my ex-farrier used them for the first time
ever, on my mare. He didn't line the nail channel up with the white line.
Instead, he fit the plastic shoe as if it were a steel shoe and pricked her by
nailing way inside the white line. You need to have him pull the shoes off and
then start soaking her sore feet in epsom salts and water several times a day.
Even just pulling the offending nails may be enough to help her out. He should
be able to tell which nails are hurting her. When she's sound again (pray she
doesn't abscess!) take another shot at Ground Control but make sure your
farrier has READ the instructions first! Mine just looked at the brochures and
nodded wisely, all the time lining the shoes up wrong. My NEW farrier trims the
feet and then marks the white line with a red felt pen. I use the clear shoes
so its very easy to see how to line them up. My farrier does all the fitting of
the shoes AFTER they are nailed on, not before, leaving them proud all around
the foot at first. Again, its a mind set thing that's a bit different for a
traditional steel shoe farrier. Expect a big increase in hoof growth with
Ground Control, both in length and wall thickness. My shelly walled QH mare
grew a wall 5/8ths of an inch THICK, not long, in 2 shoeings! For the first
time in 9 years she has strong, thick walled hooves. I'm sold! They are worth
the "train your farrier" period that seems to happen in the first few shoeings.
