Re: [RC] Choosing Between Horses - Barbara McCrary

With the new horse, you are looking at about 3 years down the road. He
needs that much time with long slow distance and training before you can so
what your current horse could be doing next year. Which is more important
to you, the new horse or being able to ride competitively during the next
2-3 years?

HELP!

Several weeks ago I went to my mom's house for the
weekend. While there, we hooked up with some friends
of her's to go riding. I had the pleasure of riding
one of their 4 year old horses out on his first real
trail ride. He did GREAT! Awesome attitude, wanted
to be in the front, and just walk, walk, walk. Not
too spooky but alert, which I like. I happened to
mention at the time that I really liked him and was
going to kidnap him and take him home with me.

Now, these people are breeders and have contacted me,
letting me know they are willing to sell the horse to
me for a very fair price. My dilema is I already have
one horse and can only afford ONE horse, both with
money and time. So help me decide:

Current Horse
6 yrs old - Non-Arab who has done 1 year of LD and now
3 50's (see CT's Sinatra AERC record)
Gorgeous pinto gelding with a great personality, total
character, likes to joke and play
Somewhat spooky about things, has a tendancy to buck
when being held back
Will probably never be a top ten horse but CAN do the
distance

New Horse
Green-broke 4 yr old - Arab, no real trail experience
(other than previous ride mentioned)
Seems to be well suited to the sport with attitude and
ability
Breeders have been successful with Endurance horses in
the past, good bloodlines, raised correctly
Would have to start over from scratch, I was just
getting going with my other guy and was looking to do
a 100 next year

I would appreciate any suggestions or comments anyone
might have. It's hard to part with a very much loved
companion but this new guys has POTENTIAL written all
over him.

Thanks!
