RE: [RC] [RC] shoeing schedule - terry banister

Trimming every 5 weeks works for us. Frequent trimming keeps the feet from becoming lopsided. Boots keep the feet from wearing down too much. The Boas Boots are working well for us. (Using the Gaiters is a must)
If you ride barefoot enough to keep the feet tough and calloused, then alternate with boots for abrasive/rocky rides, you can keep enough hoof and have a backup in case the horse does sustain a bruise once in awhile.
Depending on the living conditions and method of trim, you may never need to put the shoes back on.
Sand, however, is not good in boots.

>I would keep the shoes on. It takes time for a horse to get use to going barefoot and I wouldn't take the chance of the feet getting too short for shoes. My mare gets too short when I ride barefoot because of all the sand we have around our place. The only time her shoes are taken off is when the riding season is over. Then she goes barefoot from Nov to late March or early April. I have to be careful when I started riding her in earnest again so there will be enough foot for my farrier to get shoes on. Of course, each horse is different. Jeanie
