[RC] Shoeing schedule - Kristi Schaaf

A question for those of you who compete in nail-on
shoes....my horse will have a 6 week break between
rides soon, and I'm considering pulling his shoes and
letting him go barefoot for a month (I'd condition
barefoot when allowed, and use easy boots when needed
-not something I do at rides since terrain is so
variable here and shoes make life easier). Do any of
you pull shoes mid-season, or do you shoe throughout
the whole season, even if you have a big gap between
rides? If you do pull shoes for a short time frame, do
you have any trouble with nail holes causing breakage?
Ouchy soles? There are two reasons I'm considering
pulling shoes: 1) barefoot is healthier - or is it
really, for such a short time frame? and 2) to save
money by skipping a shoeing. But I'd like to know the
cons, if there are any. Kristi iluvdez at yahoo dot
