[RC] Healing process - Judy Finchum

Hi Karen,

I'm catching up on all the ridecamp posts and have just had a similar
experience with my mare. She was kicked 2 weeks ago in the forearm muscle,
which opened it right up (it looked like lips the Hollywood on a
Hollywoodstar:) I was able to call
and talk to my vet, however, about having it stitched. He said they don't
stitch kicks because they are "filthy" injuries....the force of the kick forces
all the dirt from their feet into the wound. The best thing is to leave them
open so they
can drain. I drove to the clinic and picked up some banamine for pain and a
sulfur antibotic. She had the antibotic for 5 days and a daily cleaning. The
wound did look goopy but is looking much better now. It is not completely
closed yet, but
is is healing well. I'm sure she will also have a scar.
