Re: [RC] What Supplements do you use? - Mike & Kathy Kelly

I use whatever supplements my hay dictates that I use. When I get a new
load of hay, I get the minerals (including Se) tested (I even invested in a
hay probe so that I can get a decent sample). I have been surprised at how
different each batch of hay is, even tho its the same type and from the same
area. I've also had my water tested, and consider that when coming up with
their daily needs. This costs about $50.

Then I have someone who uses my hay/water analysis results to recommend what
I need to supplement to feed in order to get all the mineral ratios balanced
and in the correct amounts. This costs me another $50 and is worth every
cent. I can get pretty close to what I need myself (using a spreadsheet)
but have found that its worth it to hire a nutrition specialist.

Uckele makes up a custom blend for me based on the recommendations. I tell
them what I need to supplement each horse daily, and they will make up a
batch to last for x # of horses for # days - the bigger the batch the less
the cost.

After doing this for a few years I wouldn't ever supplement without knowing
what my starting point is. Of course it would be cost prohibitive if you
buy hay in small batches, but I buy enough for a year at a time, so it works
great for me.1

ps I would never ever use Red Cell or any supplement with any iron, because
that is consistently the biggest problem with my hay - the iron is way
high - this interferes with the absorption of other mins (Cu and Zn always
need to be added, and usually a few other mins).

I love Red Cell, have used it for years but know that there are some die
hard Dynamite fans out there. Just wondering what you all use and why you
use it?
