RE: [RC] Gold Country Awards - bobmorris

Well, I happen to disagree with the principle and with what
the Ride Manager is doing. While the preponderance of the
riders entered are eventual completers, a "Participation
Award" not comply with the tenet's of the AERC Rules and
Regulations.

It is expressly stated in Rule 6., as well as in Rule L6.3
All rider who successfully complete the ride must receive a
completion award.

Now, that statement "must receive a completion award" is not
being complied with with-in the intent of the rule. Nor is
it being complied with with-in the traditions of endurance
riding and the postulate "to finish is to win".

To finish is to win a completion award and the ride managers
who believe that their "participation award" fulfills this
requirement are absolutely wrong. In their venue there is no
difference between participating and finishing. The rider
that vets out at the first vet check is awarded at the same
level as the finishers. This is not only incorrect but
subject to a protest.

I ask these ride managers, is the integrity of endurance
competition subversive to your convenience? Let's see a bit
more spirit of true endurance ride management.

I must agree with Angie. If a prize is given even when
there is no accomplishment, in this case being a ride
completion, what is the value of the prize? I think it
sends the wrong message, especially to kids. Sorry, I
cannot agree with giving "participation" awards, but each
ride manager must do what he or she wants. I'm not going to
judge either the ride or the manager for what is done; I
just happen to disagree with the principle.

We feel that everyone who has paid their money to come to
the ride, driven long distances to get there, and has
put their
heart and soul into coming to our ride deserves to get
something for
that.

No offense. I just disagree. Not with *someone else* in
mind...but
picturing myself..even in the early days. If you never
taste the
bitter, the sweet is not as sweet. Completions get to be
pretty
boring, until you get pulled a few times, then they feel
GREAT. How
good does your mattress at your house feel? Well...if YOU
sleep in a
super luxurious camper I'll bet that mattress feels about
1/2 as good
as *mine* feels after I return from a weekend on my cot.
:-) Do we all
insist on being on a constant state of up? How's about a
down now and
then to make up feel higher?

I've gone home with nothing a few times, and I've been
given t-shirts
for rides I didn't finish. Don't like to wear them, I'd
rather forget
those rides. I don't understand people who go ride a
course and pack
up and leave. Heck, sometimes I think the only reason I go
through
riding the course is to be able to hang out with everyone
afterwards.

Angie
