I think a lot of dogs can get away with the chocolate sneaking
(Christmas candy; foil wrapped chocolates come to mind) becuase they are
eating the stuff that is less pure chocolate than sugar and fat
<g>.....the pure baking chocolate or the higher grades of chocolate bars
are the ones that are especially bad....

And like anything else, toxicity is related to body size and the amount
ingested.  I am not going to be concerned when my 185 lb Mastiff scarfs up
a brownie I dropped on the floor, but when somebody's 5 lb Yorkie eats the
entire box of chocolates that arrived for Valentine's day, that could be
another matter.

Chocolate is not highly toxic to dogs--but too much in relationship to not
enough dog can cause problems.
