[RC] Falling off - k s swigart

When I fall off, I just go "splat."

If I were describe myself with way, for me, this would be another thing
to "practice at home." :)

I am personally of the opinion that one of the most important things to
know how to do in order to avoid serious riding injuries is to know how
to fall off without getting hurt, and yes, there are ways to practice
this (and much of it can be done without a horse).

This has two positive effects.

It makes you less likely to get hurt when you fall off (and your horse
as well and everybody else around for that matter because one of the
things this practice gives you is the presence of mind when you fall off
to be more likely to keep a hold of your horse....or to have taught it
not to run off).

And it also makes you less likely to fall off in the first place simply
because, if you are comfortable with falling off you become less nervous
about doing so. And being less nervous about falling off gets rid of
the vicous circle of nervous horse making rider nervous whose
nervousness makes the horse more nervous, who makes the rider more
nervous....

Anybody who gets riding lessons from me, gets lessons about how to fall
off along with lessons on how to ride. Getting on a horse without
knowing how to fall off without getting hurt is just ASKING to get hurt.
