Elysa,

Before you give up on your Big Horn saddle (especially since it fits the
horse), you might try pulling off the current fenders and putting on some 1-1/2
inch biothane leathers. I've done this with a couple of different western type
endurance saddles. You don't have a fender anymore, but it does make for a
free-swinging stirrup. Depending on how your saddle tree is made, you might be
able to position the biothane leathers further back so the stirrups hang under
you more. If the leathers tend to migrate forward, you can secure them in place
with a wood screw in the tree. I used to get such sore knees that I thought I
might not be able to do endurance, but since I started using the biothane
leathers I haven't had sore knees.

One more suggestion is to use a stirrup with some kind of shock-absorbing
system. I've noticed the Easy Ride stirrups have come out with one. I made my
own shock-absorbers using a couple of rubber chew toys for dogs. They work
extremely well!

Between the stirrup leather modification and the shock-absorbers, I've never
had so much as a hint of knee pain.

Hope this helps.
