[RC] Western States 50 Accident - Mary Abbott

Someone wrote this in an email earlier today:

"...problems might have been avoided if the woman who was being tailgated
should have pulled off the trail and refused to go on until the man on the
grey passed."

Like me, I don't believe this person was at the scene of the accident that
day. If she were, I don't think she wouldn't have made the above judgment.
There are very few places you can pass another horse, and it takes a bit of
planning and working together to do so--such as the person ahead finding a
spot at a switchback. Even that can be a bit hairy. I am sure that the
rider would've pulled over if she could have, but I doubt it was a
possibility. Like I said, I wasn't there, but I do know the trail...

I would like to know more about what or who caused this accident so that we
can do all we can to prevent any more such horrible accidents happening in
the future. I certainly hope there is a thorough follow-up investigation.
In the case of "life threatening" trail manners, perhaps such people should
be banned from further endurance rides, fined, and maybe even serve some
time... I haven't talked to anyone around here yet about this incident, but
it does sound like the rider is lucky to be alive today.
