[RC] training issues - Jena Williams

I make my horse repeat the portion of trail that he rushed. If he uses the uphill side of a ditch as an excuse to trot unasked, well we just turn around and do it again. And again. And again. Until he walks. Everytime we turn around I take him a little farther back. After a while that section or obstacle gets boring and he go calmly along. I get really nervous on a horse that rushes or jigs. This worked for me when my horse "rushed" obstacle or got antsy about catching other horses/going home. Never got upset or fought him. Just repeat as nessasary. If he was really bad and I didn't feel comfortable on his back (i.e. would have to fight him in any way) I would get off and we would go it on the ground (I insist on good ground manners before we go on trail). Same principle. We would repeat until he was calm with it (until he gives up :-) he has learned that I WILL wait him out). Then I would get back on and we would do it again. Takes time but it is worth it to me; I am happy with the results so far.
