RE: [RC] [RC] rider size vs. horse size - Catfish Daniels

I agree. To give you a couple of examples about size and breed, 2nd place of last year's Tevis Cup was a 15 year old Arabian gelding who stands about 14 hands, ridden by his owner Michel Bloch who stands over 6 feet tall. This arab was bought three years prior when it was a pasture ornament without any prior endurance experience. Yea, with the eyes it makes one wonder if Michel shouldn't sit on a horse closer to 16 hands, but in reality, they both make a perfect match.

As far as breed, this past weekend was the Napa ride - this is one tough ride. Pam Baily took 3rd place with a 16 hand paint horse AND took Best Condition. In my opinion, and I'm sure the opinions will very, it's mostly about the time and work you put into the animal. Good conformation and a good mind always help.

hi john, so if you are a newbie, do you plan to do some endurance rides? or just trail riding. you dont have to have an arab or arab cross, unless that is what you want. many other breeds and types of horses will work for you in endurance riding as well as trail riding. as for the size of the horse, there is no set formula. a lot depends on the build of the horse. i have seen guys your size on anything from 13.2 hand mustangs to 16.2 hand thoroughbreds. my father-in-law is 6' 2" and 280 lbs. he rides a 14.3 hand paso fino mare that weighs about 950. they are a good match. pick a horse that has the look you like. ed

I still prefer what it is that BH100, Tevis, The Duck's Soup of Endurance,
etc. has to offer...but, to see a horse canter over sand for those
distances...Good Lord, it humbles me.
