Re: [RC] Top five endurance horses-Arab/walker - Truman Prevatt

Kathy, if you want I can send you at attatchment on my mare Chancy.  Things I liked about her were her size (15.2), big bone and feet, but especially her smooth gaits, surefooted and the desire to go all day and run up every hill if  you let her.  She was the most difficult, cranky mare I have ever had ( some said she got the worst traits of an Arab-crazy desire to run everywhere, and Walker-bull headed).  She was grouchy, alpha mare, and challenged everything.  IT took about two years of mostly riding uphill to get a handle on her, and after that there was still a lot of negotiation.....!
That's the walking horse mare in her,
However, she ended up probably the all around best horse I have ever had; I trusted her totally, and my daughter and I did two ride and ties on her.

That's also the walking horse mare in her ;-).
Her downside at endurance rides was she was pretty big-bodied too and took longer to pulse down...probably didn't drink enough...but was getting better.  Only did 4 50's....(got pulled from the 5th when she lost a shoe), but at some point  she knocked her sesamoid bone.....and was intermittently lame...so semi retired now.
I think you need to be careful with the conformation in the walking horse. The big bulky type just have problems getting rid of heat where as my mare did fine - would drop with the Arabs. She was about even Merrry Go Boy x Midnight Sun lines and from what an one "old timer" told me she got the MGB body, long thin lanky flat muscles that had a lot of surface area to bulk so she could cool fast. You don't do a 3:40 50 in South FL with a horse that does not cool well.

She did not gait, which I did NOT want anyway.  She had an extremely fast walk, nice trot and very smooth canter.
Ah that canter - don't you love that canter? It's to die for. With my mares canter and her walk - who needed a trot, gait or anything else.

There is a new registry trying to get started to promote the cross called Airwalker.....I think Laura and I talked about this....
