RE: [RC] more foal questions? - Mcgann, Barbara

It would all depend on the circumstances.  If there was nothing wrong with the foal, I would want to wait until they are several weeks old and pretty steady on their legs and then only if you could haul the mom in one stall and the foal in another and maybe even have someone in the trailer with them.  If you haul them in one stall (which I have seen done sucessfully), you run the risk that the mare will accidently step on the baby.

On the other hand, we had a foal born with problems and it was a matter of getting him down the mountain to the vet or lose him.  We loaded his mom when he was less than an hour old and I rode with the baby and actually held him cradled in my arms so he couldn't lurch around.

Subject: [RC] more foal questions?

How soon after foaling is it advisable to haul a foal a long distance (say, an hour and a half)? Seems like it might be a stressful scenerio, and I'd guess they should be several months old, but I've heard of people hauling pretty young.
