Bottom line you do a 100 because you want to  If crossing the finish line after 100 miles knowing that you and your horse have done your best isn't enough incentive for someone - then no amount of prizes is going to get them past the bouts of dehydration, the raw ozzing hide on their legs, the barfing five miles into the last check, etc.

Hey you are speaking for me!  Actually I barf way earlier in a loop.  Some of the worse prizes I have got were on 100 milers.  And we both know why there weren't very many entries at LBL, 2 weeks before Biltmore is not good timing.  80+ started Biltmore, and had to pre register fairly early.
BTW, I didn't barf at Biltmore!!!  Came close, was laying down on the trail during one loop, but no selling Buicks.
I do 100's because I think it is the ultimate test.  The horse I did Biltmore on, Chewy (yes, after Chewbacca) I had done a 3 day 155.  The 155 was his 3rd, 4th and 5th 50's.  He didn't have any trouble with them.  And it was in January.  He finished Biltmore fine, but I could tell he was a tired puppy.  Even though he trotted out great at the finish.  NOTE TO ALL:  Trot your horses at home, as much as possible, in had that is.  He showed great at the finish, only because he had been trained to trot when told.  And then almost nodded off when Dr. Holbrook was doing the EKG for the study.
