Spray the butt with Show Sheen and let it dry before marking it with the paint stick.  It will come off much easier then.

Speaking of paint sticks, does anyone know an easy way to remove the numbers off a horse after a ride. I have a gray horse and washing doesn't seem to do the trick., even if I scrub really hard.
