Re: [RC] Hey chemists or vets, got a question for ya. - Jon . Linderman

Glycosaminoglycan (GAG)

1. A macromolecule found on the surface of eukaryotic
cells which is thought to play a role in the cell's
recognition of other cells or of a substrate. It
consists of a network of long, branched chains made up
of repeating units of disaccharides which contain amino
groups.

"D" refers to dextrorotatory as opposed "L" which is levorotatory,
basically right (D) or left (L) hand isomers of a compound.

Polysufonated means multiple sulphur groups are attached affecting
structure, like Chondroitin sulphate which can be sulphunated at the 4 or 6
carbon of the "sugar" molecule ior the 2 position on the uronic acid.
Sulphur bonds for example make hair curly and why we use ammonia to make or
straighten hair at a beauty parlor.

An acetyl group attached to the glucosamoglycan is a small 2 carbon
molecule, a bit larger than a methyl group.

Bascially these additions/substitutions affect the 3-dimensional structure
and ultimately the biological activity.

Which is better....have not a clue!

What's the difference between 'polysulfated
glycosaminoglycan' and 'acetyl D-glycosaminoglycan'?
