Right, and isn't 7% about a good protein level for an adult horse?
Gosh, hard to find hay that low...last
thing I want to feed is high-protein feed.

Actually, maintenance level is more like 8+%.  And work doesn't add much
to that.  I like to see protein levels for working adult horses around
10%, just to make sure there is enough amino acid variety to cover the
quality-of-protein part of it.
