Even if you just turn him out for the next 6 months, you won't know if
you had an injury and you won't know if it is healed unless you do an
ultrasound (although if you are going to rest him anyway, you can do the
ultrasound at the end of the rest).

Not to mention that if it IS a tendon injury, turning him out
to romp and play is likely to cause more harm.  

I've dealt with a tendon injury in a hind leg that was 
called a "windpuff" by the first vet to see it. It's now 
healed, and the horse has done several LDs & 50s on it, but it 
was a long road (well worth it for this horse & I pretty much
doubled all the time estimates given by the vet just to be
safe).
