There are also fake "cashiers Checks", Postal Money orders, and believe it or not- Fake American Express Travelers Checks. To protect yourself, I would suggest a bank to bank electronic wire transfer of funds, or even open an "escrow" with a lawyer or an actual real estate title company holding the escrow funds. You don't indicate the size of the price in your problem, but then none of us wants to lose any money to anyone unethical. If the other party gets hinky, contact authorities at both ends of the deal. You may just bust someone who has pulled this kind of thing before.
