I had a Arabian gelding that developed a bad
splint. I had the surgery performed on him. They removed about 2/3
of the bone. It healed fine etc. Eventually, he became a WY mountain
horse because of other leg problems I did not want to spend years
rehabilitating.
I would say that you should have the surgery.
Chances are very good that he will heal just fine.
