Re: [RC] [RC] Coat and condition questions - Laurie Durgin

Cushings has some of those symptoms espcially as she is older, could be many things, but may be Cushings onset.

Having moved my horses to paddocks and out of boxes seems to have agreed tremendously with all of them. They have gained weight and are very happy, but I'm a bit concerned still about my favourite mare, Dory. She's a copper chestnut who began getting white hairs sprinkled through her coat over the last few years. Her coat is never thick as she's pretty much all Arab, but this spring I notice that it seems thinner than usual and rather dull in colour/texture. She's always had a tendency to a dry skin and it's quite dry in places. She's gained condition more than most of the others as she was quite thin before, and she has plenty of energy. We enjoyed an hour and a half fast trot around the farms yesterday and she would have done most of it at a canter if allowed. I'm trying to figure out if we have some sort of nutritional deficiency here or a hormonal problem???? We only have the most rudimentary of labs, so most of my fixes are trial and error. Their diet is a free choice mix of fresh alfalfa and rice hay with additional soaked barley, a bit of bran and chopped wheat hay, and the grass in the paddock. I'm going to add some corn oil to Dory's food and to my old lady Nimbus's (she's in her late 20's and not keeping the weight on so well anymore). Any other suggestions would be appreciated.
