[RC] Horses Passing - Tamara Taylor

I think it is much more selfish to prolong any animal's suffering because it
hurts you too much to let them go. In my opinion by euthanizing our beloved
horses, dogs, cats, etc. we are being self-less - we hurt emotionally so they
don't have to suffer any longer.

I agree that a bullet in the brain is a feasible and humane option as well. I
intend to keep my gelding to the end of his days but when the time comes when
his quality of life has depleted to the point where release is what he needs
you can bet I will be there and I will take my responsibility as an owner
seriously.

The thing that bothers me is when people will sell their aged horse for
slaughter. My friend sold her 20+ year old Pony Club horse for slaughter this
fall. That mare was her first horse and carried her to many competitions and
national championships. Perhaps it was a responsible decision to end the old
mare's life but IMO if a horse gives you years of faithful service the least
you can do is end their life with dignity on your own property. Once the horse
is gone than I don't see a problem with letting wildlife take care of it. I do
believe that the stress of transport and the slaughter house environment is not
a fair end for our faithful old friends.

Anyway, that's my $0.02. Going to don my flame retardant suit now.

Tam
