[RC] gaited horses, and posting - A. Perez

Once upon a time, saddle horses (as opposed to draft horses)
were commonly gaited (ie: did some sort
of 4-beat gait rather then a 2 beat), as it makes for a more
comfortable ride. Carriage horses were less often gaited.
One method of driving a multi-horse hitch is for the driver to
ride 'postillion' on one of the lead horses rather then sit in
the carriage. He was the 'Post Rider'. Since carriage horses
often were NOT gaited, post riders developed the method of
rising to the trot... hence the term 'posting'. Only
later did the practice of posting spread to general riding
as gaited breeds became less prevelent.
