Re: [RC] OT - Mad Cow Disease in WA State - Sue Koost

the USA closed the border to any import of Canadian  beef when one lone cow was discovered.  The border is still closed to some types of our beef.  Our farmers continue to suffer.   Our dairy farmers are still getting almost nothing in  $ for the cull cows.  Should Canada do the same to the US?

The US beef industry may have some clout on the guy that wants to be president, congressman or senator. This morning in the St. Pete Times that eight nations, including our largest beef importer Japan, have blocked US beef imports.  This added to the EU that already blocks the import of most US beef products because of the use of hormones should get someone's attention to try to figure how how it got here, how long it's been here, etc. I sure would not want to be a rancher right now - just when the market was recovering.

I remain confident that our country administrators know absolutely nothing of the situation and how bad it might truly be (fyi - mad cow disease does not suddenly "crop up" in one solitary animal in an entire country).  We will shortly see how powerful the US beef industry really is...
