[RC] an alternative to pepper spray for bears - Ed Kilpatrick

here are the rules in montana for avoiding bears, especially grizzlies.   they only apply to those visiting from out of state,  as the locals know what to do.
1. when venturing out into potential bear habitat,  it is best not to travel alone.
2. you should make lots of noise while going through the woods.  bears will normally leave the area because of the noise.
3. many people have discovered that wearing small bells attached to their clothing helps make sufficient noise to frighten away the bears.
4. learn to identify grizzly bear habitat by recognizing their tracks and droppings.  the tracks are easy to spot, they are very, very large with long claw marks.    the droppings are easy to identify also,   they usually contain remnants of small bells!           cowboy ed
