GPS units by there nature will eat batteries. There are 12 receivers in there - they need two receivers per spacecraft. Then add the processor and there is a lot of electronics involved. The receivers eat the majority of the power. Maybe the next generation receivers will be better.

We use rechargeables and change them often. The biggest hassle is making
sure you always have a set ready to go. We have enough for three or four
sets. If they sit around too long they lose some of their charge. Using a
"quick charger" to recharge them will get them charged in a couple of hours.
