RE: [RC] new riders. - j marshall

some people may learn everything by research and
books but I cannot I have to do. You cant learn
everything about skiing and be a great skier by
research and books you have to do it and having an
experienced skier go down your first few slopes with
you helps. Let it be voluntary, Juniors get sponsored
why cant I?

I think I am ready to get out of the ride camp before
do not want to do Endurance anymore.

a now very discourage new rider

All this "mentoring a newbie" just doesn't sit well
with me. What
exactly can a mentor do for a newbie at a ride?
Slow him down? It makes
no sense to me how some stranger ought to tell a
newbie ANYTHING about
the newbie's horse. Just because somebody is
labeled as a "newbie" in
endurance, does not mean that they are any less
knowlegable about the
ability of their horse(s).

The magic about endurance is about the rider knowing
his own horse
better than anybody, therefore knowing and
identifying problem signs,
etc. Riding with a mentor will only make newbies
"rely" on the mentor.

What if the mentor does not know the newbie's horse
at all, fails to
identify warning signs, etc??????? How is the
mentor going to feel if
something still goes wrong with the newbie's horse -
even if they rode
at a 10+ hour pace???? Can't you already hear the
blaming and finger
pointing??? I know of people with several hundred
miles under their
belt, but only have been involved with horses for 2
and three years.
How are they going to tell a "newbie" about their
horse when in fact the
"newbie" has been involved with horses all their
lives, perhaps in other
disciplines? What if the "newbie" happens to be an
equine vet???? Just
a thought...

It does sound like a very good, grass roots avenue
for learning. It's
just
the type of 1x1 level education which is best in
this kind of very
personalized environment.

It would be nice to have the education/sanctioning
group (AERC in this
case) be the one that finance such an effort (rather
than the individual

ride managers). Education of new members is a goal
for all and support
of
that goal where the rubber-meets-the-road is the
best way to get there.
It's basically an personalized endurance clinic:)
with the incentive
provided by the organization.
