I have been teaching mine to come when I whistle and I can whistle very 
loud using my fingers.  I always called my kids home this way. better 
than shouting.
I got tired of walking to the far corner of the front pasture to get the 
horses when I wanted  to ride and have them take off running to the barn 
in far back pasture, so I started whistling for them to come to barn.  
No more walking all over the pasture and I always give them a little 
feed when they come.  I hoping this will carry over if they get away 
from me on the trail.
