[RC] sport saddle - soreness - Jena Williams

"Have you considered the possibility that something other than the saddle is
making him sore?

terre"

I have considered it. The Stonewall is what I started with, and he kept having behavior problems in early training that I found inconsistant with his personality. So, I tried all our saddles on him and he seemed to like the Passier the best (just saddle him up and turn him out, he lets me know REAL quick what he thinks.) So I rode in that awhile. Fell alot, since he was/is very green and spooks unexpectedly.

As he began to muscle up the passier was too narrow and it took 3 chiro sessions to straighten him out. The back pain and falls made his spooky behavior so bad that I couldn't even take him on trail anymore! So, back to the saddle hunt and positive riding experiences. I knew we needed something that would help me hold my seat, and be comfortable for him while he got used to carrying a rider. We needed to experience some successful spooks to build his confidence (successful = I stay on and in control). I bought a Mackinder. Sounded good in theory, best of both worlds. The one I bought was assymetrical and had to send back (they were very accomodating. The regular version was too narrow, so they replaced with a "wide") While I waited for the replacement Mackinder I bought a Bob Marshall SS trail model off ebay. It has been wonderful for us geting through the fear issues. I stay on, and now he spooks MUCH less. But, he gets sore in the loins. I had the stirrups set back 2", thinking it was the "western" positioning. No help, but at least I can post now.

The other saddles it was shoulders or mid-back that was sore. The new Mackinder came in and I think it is still too narrow. I rode in it once. He was symmetrically sore all along where the panels sit. Beautifu sweat pattern though. And the lg position was to die for compared with the BM! I actually wonder if the Mackinder is better, and that the soreness could be from him not being used to any rigidity in the saddle?

I know I am going to get suggestions for the panel saddles. I don't think they are for me. If I have to get one so he can be comfortable, I will. But I rode him in an Ortho-flex and he hated it. He wouldn't move and I couldn't feel him at all. All communication had to be heels and reins. Not our way to ride. But, I do not close all options. If someone near Poway (San Diego area) wants to lend me a wide tree panel saddle that has close contact I would love to see if they help him. :-)
