Re: [RC] vermont 100/50 - Stagg_Newman

Jennifer,

If you go condition on serious hills once a month you should have no
problem doing a 50 in Octover in Vermont. You could probably even do
the VT 50 in late July provided you take it really easy. It is probably
most important to take it easy on the downhills, walking the steeper
ones and doing a very controlled slow trot on the others. You will need to
train your horses to do that. Keep them will collected
and "in hand" going down the hills. BTW dressage, that is basic
equitation, training is very helpful in this regard.

Note that in training I will do downhills slow and carefully while I will
push on the uphills. The former prevents lameness
while the latter conditions the horse.

And when you have a really good foundation on a horse (take a couple of
years of course), then galloping up long hills
puts the finishing touch on a great conditioning program. That's why we
live next to a 2000 foot climb.
