Re: [RC] [Guest] Zoom Zoom/ lost horses - Jackie Winkleman

I haven't been following this post too much, soooo many things to do, so little time!!!  If someone has already mentioned these, please forgive me...

There is an Icom model IC-R10 that my husband's friends use for tracking the hunting dogs.  (They have been hounding him to get one).  So, I finally ordered him one for about 300 dollars.  It has many, many frequencies.  It is a handheld model.  I think you can get an antenna for less than 100.  I can't remember the number of collars that can be programmed into it (by name or code, etc).  From what I understand, you can buy any brand of collar.  It wouldn't be a bad idea to get just one reciever and split the cost with a group of people.

I'll try to remeber and let you guys know how it works.

This story and others has also hit me very hard and really made me
think. Someone earlier talked about tracking devices from "hunting dog
supply companies". I guess hunters have been losing their dogs as long as
we have been losing horses. This is what I found out. At
www.gundogsupply.com the cheapest (and seems the most versatile) tracking
system is the Innotec RD-400. It's $459.95 and comes with one collar
(additional collars $140.00 each) that would be easy to mount somehow on
the back of a saddle. At www.huntingdogsupplies.net the same system comes
with 2 collars and is $580.00. I am really starting to think about
this. It seems that most of the horses lost are eventually found dead not
far from where they were last seen. These tracking devices have a 7 mile
range in ideal conditions, much less I'm sure in hills and woods but what
an advantage when you're looking for your lost horse. Maybe we could split
the cost with riding buddies? You only need one tracking device, just more
than one collar. Anyway, just a thought.

Tracy
