Re: [RC] [Guest] Too old / too green? - sharp penny

Ann, you can do what ever you set your mind to. :D
Start small and take baby steps toward your goal.
Begin by taking weekly or bi weekly lessons.(preferably
dressage) Find endurance rides close to you and go watch
and volunteer. Don't worry about lack of skills, you will
be taught whatever task the ride manager decides they need
you to fill. I had never taken a pulse until I went to my
first endurance ride to help out. Ask lots of questions.
Once you get comfortable working with and around horses
think about leasing a *schoolmaster* horse. There are alot
of wonderful older trail horses that know their job and
will take care of you while you learn. It may be the stable
where you take lessons at has one....or someone locally.
You will be surprised at what opportunities will arise
once you begin working toward you goal!
By the way 28 is just a number..any age is a great age to
learn....just ask those that take up riding at 50! ;)

Regards,
Penny

Talk about putting the cart before the horse: I have
fallen head over
heels in love with Endurance riding, but I'm not even
what you would call
an advanced beginner horseperson. I would love to be
able to enter a LD
and just finish (one day), but worry that I am too old
and too
inexperienced to attempt it in the future. I'm 28 (yes,I
know that's not
really old) but I have no horse experience, besides three
weeks at a summer
camp, don't own a horse, and am afraid of falling.

I've read where people have started riding later in life,
but can you take
up a new activity like horseback riding and then build up
to such a
strenuous sport like endurance riding in a few short
years?
