[RC] [Guest] Choke - Ridecamp Moderator

Sheila Larsen Sheila_Larsen@xxxxxxx
I have had lots of experience with horses choking as my horse has a problems with it, actually it is a little bit of a physical anomoly that she has. But I have had friends whose horse's choke. If it just happened once and you think maybe your horse was bolting food then perhaps something to get him to slow down. I think wetting, chopping etc isn't necessary and going overboard unless he does it a few more times. At that point you may want to get him scoped as there are lots of causes for choke and you cann't manage what you don't understand. Pellets can be a problem so look at that closely. I would recommend if your horse chokes again make sure you take his temperature for a few days to make sure he doesn't get pneumonia as a result of aspirating fluid. I would also wet his hay for a few days afterwards as his throat may be sore. Poop happens and it may never happen again.
