Re: [RC] [RC] Canadian Slaughter - Bette Lamore

Hi Karen
You almost have the story right. The farm was breeding for race horses and the locals in Santa Ynez found out what was happening and put an end to the kitty meals at the zoo. Probably just created a burial yard in the back forty.
Then the farm said OK-- so you want us to save them all and they flooded the market with Arabians--- put most of the other breeders in a hole-- they were giving the horses away-- nice pedigrees-- not bad conformation-- just not race material. It was a bad situation all around. Fortunately they do not do that anymore since the bread winner passed on--- no more tax write-off . His kids got the money--- the new wife got the horses and so guess who's not breeding much anymore :-)
Bette (who is not naming names)

gotta jump in here for a sec. about 13 years ago, give or take one i don't remember exactly, i was told about a large well known show breeder in california that had 200 foals hit the ground that year. if i remember the numbers right they picked 20% as their potential show crop, a second 20% went to the other farm as "maybes". the 60% left went to the zoo to be lion food. when the person telling me about this said she was asked to look at some of the 60% and guess why they were in that group? she told me they were knock down gorgeous and she couldn't fathom why? answer? they had to much white on them, mostly on the heads. to much white might of been just a plain blaze.

is this a responsible breeder just because they show and win??????? i've known much more responsibility out of what many would term "backyard" breeder.

when we first moved to atascadero back in '77 i was taken around to visit many of the local arab farms, i looked forward to it as i'd seen many nice, fancy, glossy ads in AHW for some of these places. boy was i shocked. skinny horses. sick horses. deformed horses. run down junk heap of barns. fencing that was frightening.

just my 2 cents worth.
