[RC] automatic sanctions - terre

Well, I think this thread has about run it's course, so one last comment and then I'll shut up...
There has been considerable comment about "guilt" and "punishing the innocent"---I think you are looking at this the wrong way. Consider this: You could compare this with what happens when a police officer shoots somebody; they have an automatic suspension (desk duty) until the incident has been investigated. (I'm assuming this happens in real life and not just TV!). This happens even when the case is clear-cut and there are lots of witnesses. There is no particular stigma attached to it because everybody knows it is not "personal", it is--get this--"automatic". In addition to the obvious (fact gathering), this process provides two benefits 1)it gives the officer a 'cooling off' period to cope with the trauma and deal with what happened and 2)it assures the public that their police force is not just running around shooting people willy-nilly with no accountability.

terre (hey Joe--shooting 'em was Truman's first idea--I think "swamp" and "gator" figured in the conversation--but I (ever the voice of moderation) thought that was too extreme. Besides, I think it might be illegal in some places.)
