[RC] it's not the distance..... - terre

While the Pan Am was a tragedy and should be considered, it was only one of many deaths in the US this year and I suspect when the smoke clears, not all the riders were burning the course. In my experience it is not necessarily the front runners that are getting into trouble, its horses from the front of the pack to the back of the pack. So we need to understand the whole problem not just one incident.

.....it's the *relative *speed.  A speed that is appropriate and safe for one horse may 
be far too fast for another.  "Too fast" means too fast for that horse, not too 
fast for any horse--they can't be compared at our normal, domestic rides.  At PACs, etc, 
however we assume that all of the horses are in excellent condition; it is (or should be) 
a case of the best vs the best.  So comparing the speeds is, perhaps, a little more valid.
