RE: [RC] New topic/manes - Bob Morris

Odds are that it was "captan" It is often used for
eradication of mites. Some times on Rain Rot and other
fungicidal infections.

ROFL! Angie, he was probably referring to a
fungicide....roses are
notorious for "black spot", which causes the leaves to drop
off.
Hmmmm...don't know the side effects are of using that on
horses! <grin>
Perhaps remove the spots from an Appaloosa?

Both my guys have a great mane and tail. I don't bathe my
horses a lot,
but when I see "itchy" activity, I wash their mane and tail
in Selsun
Blue, the dandruff shampoo, following the directions as for
human
dandruff. Have also used the "antibacterial" dish soap, but
harder to
wash out and doesn't seem to work quite as well. Brushing
EVERY day with
a dog groomer and Cowboy Magic or Show Sheen will let it
grow long
without breaking off....when you groom, look closely in
there for
"yellow crusties".

Kaboot's mane it thick & to his shoulder, his forelock it
thick and very
long. It was like that when I bought him at almost 5 years
of age. So I
was surprised when his former owner told me that when he
was young he
kept it all rubbed off to the skin and he didn't think
he'd ever have a
mane. He said somebody recommended that he "Put the stuff
on it that you
put on rose bushes" (your guess is as good as mine). He
said after that
it grew right in. My theory is that judging from Kaboot's
forelock it had
a little fertilizer in there with the insecticide. :-)
