When I got my gelding 3 yrs ago (he was 14 at the time), he had a short tail 
that didn't even reach his hocks, and a rather thin, shortish mane.  He was 
just on pasture (good pasture, but I don't think he was getting supplemented).  
He's been on biotin ever since I've had him (for 3 yrs).  His tail is now 
nearly to the ground, and his mane is thick and hangs below his neck.  I think 
the biotin may help him grow stronger hair that resists breaking...I might be 
off base, but it makes sense.
