[RC] Question for the vets - deworming after known exposure? - Kristi Schaaf

I normally use a conservative deworming program
because of our good manure management at home. But we
just returned from a wonderful riding vacation where I
think my horses were heavily exposed to parasites.
They were kept in a small pasture for a week in what
at first glance appeared to be lush grass. I noticed
right away that they were just kinda picking at it,
and on closer inspection I saw that there was a
summer's worth of decaying manure coating the whole
grass area. I tried to keep them content with lots of
hay, but saw them grazing occasionally in the grassy
area. So, my question is. WHEN should I deworm them to
best hit everything they picked up this week? Right
now? Wait a month? They were last wormed with
equimectrin in August, and normally I wouldn't worm
them again till mid November. This makes me realize
that if I start competing a lot next year, I'll have
to increase my deworming schedule because of all the
exposure in areas that I can't control.
Thanks! Kristi iluvdez at yahoo dot com
