[RC] [Guest] Shoeing, Scientific Data and Aluminum Shoes - Ridecamp Moderator

Laurie A. Underwood jimmy@xxxxxxxxxxx
I don't know about the scientific data, but I do know that my mare is a bit flat-footed and even with shoes, is ouchy on gravel. I add pads for rocky rides or risk stone bruises.

Regarding aluminium shoes: I am considering trying aluminum shoes at my farrier's advice. My mare is a bit lazy and she has been known to stumble -- not over roots she can see, but over things we cannot see -- it's as if she calculates exactly how much she believes she needs to pick up her feet, and if she doesn't see an obstacle, we sometimes have a problem). He's not big on squaring off toes, but has been knocking them down some, which minimizes the stumbling. He has said that lighter weight of the shoe will help her -- we are using St. Croix eventers right now. I'm wondering how well aluminum wears in sand. I used to shoe every six weeks, but due to logistical problems, switched to another farrier and seem only get four weeks out of the trims before the horse looks long in the toe. So, if I go to four weeks between trims, will the aluminum shoes last that long? We train in the Southeast where it is predominantly sand, with some rocks and roots. Any ideas or suggestions?
