Even if you don't stay in
a pack for the entire ride, odds are you won't end up alone in that 80-100
mile zone, in the dark, which really freaks some people out.
Riding alone in the dark can really solidify your bond with your horse.
Fear
of the dark is another "secret" reason some people won't do hundreds,
though.

'Sfunny, that's one of my favorite things about 100's--that "bubble" or
"zone" that you get into with your horse, just the two of you, with the
darkness insulating you alone in the dark.  The bonding is INCREDIBLE and it
is a very peaceful sort of time.  You just don't know what that's like,
unless you experience it.
