After living there for 12 years, I can tell you that it is a great move. Land prices however, aren't that great. You might want to consider Pahrump or other outlying areas. Last year, I had friends that were looking for horse property in the Las Vegas area and prices where $50,000 an acre, they decided to move to Pahrump where it was $10,000. Land is has become scarce in Vegas. However, Pahrump is that long of commute.

I'm considering a move to southern Nevada.  Kat wants to move to a
warmer climate, and although I generally hate cities I like Las Vegas.
We looked at southern California, and fortunately once Kat visited
there she lost interest in moving there (whew!!!!!).

The fact that we enjoy playing poker, and I make money at it, is a
consideration too.       ; ^ >

What kind of horse property is available within, say, 30 miles of Las
Vegas, and what is the general cost range?  I'd like as much acreage
as I can afford, but if the cost is high I could settle for about ten
acres.  I don't need a big house, there are just the two of us.  Kat
would even like to rent, since we'll probably move again once I retire
from full-time jobs in about five years.

Flagstaff Arizona is another prospect, but from what I've seen jobs
for a Unix Administrator are scarce there.
