I have to put my two cents in...I have been in this sport for over ten years.. I have known these riders (the riders mentioned in these posts) for a long time as well.. they all have one thing in common..that is they do their homework!!! This means long slow distance and CONSISTANCY!!!! No amount of goodies and electrolytes take the place of the work that is needed to become a long distance horse. Do any of you do long distance running??? Do you understand the work involved to get yourself ready for a marathon?? With long distance runners nutrition plays a major force in finishing a 100 miler... but remember that each runner (horse) is different. Some runners use protein drinks (Ensure) to get through their 100's. Most runners become ill (milk protein) and drink Soy based products. Some like Scott Jurek eat Tofu. Think of what your horse is going through. What I am getting at is that each horse is different. Pay attention to your horses' body!! Ultrarunners usually shut down after these races, horses can "right themselves" as Dr. Jim Steere DVM puts it.. I dont have all the answers, but I know that if the base is there (I mean a long term riding program)and you bring along the horse SLOWLY over at least a year, you will have a sound horse that is metabolically fit. Document your workouts, that means the attitude of your horse that day, what is working (ie electrolytes) and change what is not working. This is not a get on your horse and ride sport. Do your homework!!!!
Sincerely,
Micki Mc Govern-Turney
