Re: [RC] Question for SUSAN GARLINGHOUSE DVM! - DESERTRYDR1

I am thinking about buying a piece of land that is in a mix of pasture grass
and alfalfa, about 50/50. The guy who owns is it has been cutting hay off it.
I would be pasturing my horses on it, with a series of small pens so that I
could feed hay at night and then turn them out to graze. My question is, is
that too much alfalfa? My feeling is that they don't need that much "raw"
alfalfa, I'm worried about foundering, etc. The youngest one is a 2 1/2 yr old
mule. The pasture was just cut, and I was thinking about spraying it with 2,4D
or some other broadleaf killer to get rid of the alfalfa, but I don't know how
long it would be before I could put the horses out, or if I would have to
remove all of the killed alfalfa. Any help you can give would be much
appreciated. I got lots of help from people on Ridecamp about the general
issues of
buying land away from the house, and one reply that said they would graze it
all
out anyway, but I'm not entirely reassured that it would be okay to put them
out there.
