last november, one of my pregnant mares contracted the west nile virus.  she was 7 months pregnant at the time.  she was treated and survived with no ill effects.  she was also vaccinated for wnv in january.  the foal was born, happy, healthy and completely normal.  the mare, unfortunately, was kicked by another horse this past july,  broke a leg and had to be put down.  after surviving the latest new "fear", it sure is ironic, isnt it?  so, do you gamble?  i say that the benefits of the vaccine outweigh the negative side.      ed
